Ecos and the NRDC measured the power draw of Plasma and LCD televisions on display at big box retail stores and not surprisingly found that these TVs consume a significant amount of energy.
Some of the key research findings include:
- Some less-efficient models consumed more electricity each year than a new refrigerator
- Operating costs can be up to several hundred dollars over a 10-year life span
- Plasma TVs consumed considerably more energy than equivalent LCD models
- TVs now represent approximately 5% of residential electricity use and over 1% of all national electricity use
This research helped the NRDC in their efforts towards moving the industry into more efficient designs that could cut our nation’s power bill by up to $10 billion per year. The NRDC and Ecos will continue to partner on further research and policy initiatives and expect new developments on TV efficiency in the near future.
